Participation in Winwind Workshop

Agustin Rioperez, the CEO of DTBird&DTBat, was among the guest speakers at the recent Winwind Workshop on The new Balearic law on Climate Change and the opportunities to integrate wind energy in protected areas held on November 8th on the Island of Menorca (Spain).

Agustin's presentation on the features of the different DTBird&DTBat models was followed by a discussion about the applicability of the technology in the wind farms proposed for the Balearic Islands.

Results of the Pilot Evaluation of DTBirdV4D4 Detection and Collision Avoidance Modules in the USA

DTBird’s ability to detect and deter large raptors, particularly golden eagles, and to reduce the risk of collisions with wind turbines (WTG) was evaluated in the USA by H.T. Harvey & Associates for the American Wind Wildlife Institute.
The evaluation was carried out in 7 DTBirdV4D4 units installed in 2016 in a California wind farm, using eagle-like unmanned aerial vehicles (aka, UAV) with a 2 m wingspan, and studying in situ large raptor behavior registered during 2017.
From the Evaluation, DTBird has calculated (review notes) and extracted the following major results:

  • DTBirdV4 Detection Module:
    • Up to 99%1 Overall eagle-like UAV Detection rate from > 230 m to the Rotor Swept Area (RSA). Calculated by DTBird Team.
    • 63% mean Detection rate per distance band of 30 m (7 distance bands from >230 m to the RSA). Extracted from the report.
    • 2.5 False Positive rate (flight recording of something other than birds)/WTG/day2. Calculated by DTBird Team.
  • DTBirdD4 Collision Avoidance Module:
    • Deterrence response rates3 when considering unequivocally successful deterrence and potential deterrence:
      • 52-83% for golden eagles.
      • 36-76% for buteos.
      • 39-78% for all raptors. 
  • DTBirdV4D4 service reliability4 (operation without failures) calculated by DTBird Team:
    • >98% System.
    • >98% HD Cameras.
    • 100% Collision Avoidance Module.

1 DTBird calculation for a flight path from >230 m to the RSA, through 7 distance bands with the mean detection rate presented in the Pilot Study (figure 19, page 51; DTBird note on the same page gives calculation details and online access to these calculations). New Offices and Assembling Facilities

After several months of preparation, the new offices and assembling facilities have started full production. The space has been doubled to more than 600 m2 and the staff has grown to over 20 technicians that are working on research, manufacturing, and providing technical support to over 100 DTBird&DTBat operational units.

This expansion will make it possible for us to install over 100 new units during the next six months in Austria, France, Germany, Greece, Spain and the USA.

DTBird&DTBat Team Participated in WindEnergy Hamburg 2018

DTBird&DTBat technicians presented the latest models with upgraded features to over 50 companies and public organizations. They also discussed the results of the latest evaluation of DTBirdV4D4 (model 2016) in the USA. 

Currently DTBird is operating in 2 onshore wind farms in Germany and it is scheduled to be installed in another wind farm in the following months. Additionally, DTBird has been operating in the Offshore Platform FINO 1 for over 2 years.

DTBird in Germany

At first, at the end of 2015, DTBirdV4 started operating in the Offshore Platform Fino 1, over 40km offshore in the North Sea, contracted by the Bundesamt für Seeschiffahrt und Hydrographie (BSH). This year the models DTBirdV4D8 and DTBirdV8 have been installed for the first time in onshore wind turbines in Lower Saxony and Bavaria.


DTBird will participate in the following events, the first one giving the guest lecture of "fieldornithology" at the University of Applied Sciences Weihenstehphan-Triesdorf on April the 10th. In the second event DTBird will attend WindEnergy Hamburg at hall A1, stand 203 on September 25-28th.

DTBird and DTBat start operating in The Netherlands

First DTBirdV8 unit and DTBatD3 unit have started operating in Windpark Krammer, located in Zeeland, The Netherlands. Additional units will be installed during the wind farm construction until 2019.
These are the first DTBird&DTBat units installed in concrete towers.

DTBirdV4D8 model is included in LIFE project

The model DTBirdV4D8 has been installed in the Wind Farm Terna, in Thrace (Greece) under the project LIFE12 BIO/GR/000554. This project aims to demonstrate the practical application of post-construction assessment and post-construction mitigation. DTBird was already participating in the LIFE project with the model DTBirdV4D4 that started operating at the Wind Farm and the Park of Energy Awareness (PENA) of CRES at Keratea (Greece) at the beginning of 2016.

DTBird Team visits the wind farm where a new test program has started

Two DTBirdV4D8 units are operating with Collision Avoidance module D8 (8 speakers distributed at 2 heights, below the lower point reached by the blades and below the nacelle). Each unit has two settings (sound activated/muted) which switch from one to the other every week. Every week one unit has the sound activated and the other the sounds muted.

The wind farm is located in Castilla y Leon (Spain) and the most frecuent species detected in the vacinity of the wind turbines are: Gyps fulvus, Milvus milvus, Buteo buteo and Falco ssp.

The collected data will be used for the species specific evaluation of the DTBird Collision Avoidance module.

DTBird finishes first phase of a research program to improve the Collision Avoidance module

DTBird in cooperation with the Spanish Wildlife Recovery Center (GREFA) and the Animal Medecine and Surgery Veterinarian Faculty of the Complutense (Spanish University) has tested the hearing of the following bird species: Aquila chrysaetos, Falco naumanni, Gyps fulvus and Milvus milvus.

The Audiogram Plots of these species will be used to create new species-specific collision avoidance sounds and to adjust the design of speaker's location and sound levels emitted, customized for both target species and wind turbine dimensions.

The bird's hearing research is still open to add more species and individuals.
